Civil Liberties Councils Call for National Human Rights Act
The Civil Liberties Councils of Australia - Queensland Council for Civil Liberties, Civil Liberties Australia, New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties and Liberty Victoria have today joined together to sponsor a webinar discussing why Australia needs a National Human RIghts Act.
“The webinar to be held at 5.30 pm today 29 April will feature Queensland Human Rights Commissioner Scott McDougall and representatives of Civil Liberties Australia to explain why we need a National Human Rights Act” says QCCL President Michael Cope
“Australia is the only western democracy without a National Human Rights Act or equivalent. This needs to be changed!” says Mr Cope
We are coming to the end of a rather dour election campaign in which the protection of our basic rights and liberties has not rated a mention.
“If we want to put justice fairness and equality at the heart of the Commonwealth Government’s decision making process we need a National Human Rights Act”
“We now have over 20 years of experience with Human Rights Acts in Australia - in the ACT, Victoria and Queensland. No harm has been done to those States. No doubt all of the Acts could be improved, but there is clear evidence they have improved the lives of citizens of those jurisdictions” says Michael Cope
The Civil Liberties Councils calls upon our political parties to commit to the protection for our basic rights and liberties by introducing in the next term a National Human Rights Act
