Nudist Beaches

Mr Cope President of the QCCL today expressed concerns about the prosecution of nudists at Alexandria Bay Noosa.

Mr Cope says, “The Council accepts that the public exhibition of sexual activities should be banned. However, we also take the view that nude beaches should be permitted so long as they are in secluded areas and are known and clearly marked as nude beaches.  If necessary, the State Government or relevant local councils should take steps to designate nude beaches and to mark and publicise them appropriately.”

We note that Alexandria Bay appears on a naturist website as a nudist beach and therefore seems to be known for this activity.

The objection to these beaches seems to be based on the unstated premise that all nudity is inherently sexual, and nudity will increase illicit sexual activity. This is a nonsense.

To ban nude beaches because possibly there might be some sex on them, would require the banning of public toilets for exactly the same reason. There is no doubt also sex on clothed beaches.

Denmark basically has almost all its beaches as clothing optional beaches[1], and they don’t have any significant problems.

“Just over 17 years ago the QCCL called upon State or local authorities to designate and publicise the location of clothing optional beaches. We renew that call today “says QCCL President Michael Cope
