QCCL opposes privatisation of police data management system

The Queensland Council for Civil Liberties expressed serious concerns that the Queensland Police Service has reportedly sold Queensland’s forensic case management system to ‘Bdna’ https://www.itnews.com.au/news/queensland-police-sells-forensic-management-system-to-bdna-567480?utm_source=desktop&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=share .

QCCL Vice-President, Angus Murray said that “it is gravely concerning that there appears to be an increasing appetite for the privatisation of law enforcement tools and systems and any such sale should be deeply scrutinised as regards to the potential impact upon individual liberties”.

The QCCL noted with equal concern that references being made to the case management system being a ‘single register’ for information is deeply problematic from a cyber-security perspective, particularly as that register inherently would contain troves of personal, sensitive and health information.

Mr Murray also said that the foreshadowed integration “between QPRIME and Qld Health seems like a complete disaster waiting to happen” and that “the reported intention of development of the forensic system being focused on ‘the needs of users (law enforcement)’ is misplaced and that focus should instead be placed on ensuring that the public and individuals’ personal information is properly protected.

The QCCL calls upon the Government to provide more information about the reported sale of Queensland’s forensic case management system and greater transparency about its use and operation.
