Sex Workers, Teachers and the Anti-Discrimination Act
“There is no rational reason at all to presume that a sex worker is incapable of being a good teacher.” says Mr Cope President of the QCCL.
The Queensland Council for Civil Liberties condemns the proposal of the Premier Mr Beattie to amend the Anti-Discrimination Act to prevent sex workers working as teachers.
The President of the Council, Mr Cope says, “It is not justifiable to discriminate against a person on the basis of what is in fact a lawful sexual activity.”
Mr Beattie seems to be the victim of a moral panic.
Mr Cope says “Both the Anti–Discrimination Act and the Industrial Relations Act are designed to ensure that people do not lose their jobs or are not excluded from jobs for reasons which are not related to their performance. One would have thought that Mr Beattie would appreciate that philosophy and support it.”
The Council calls upon the government to leave the Anti-Discrimination Act alone.
